Both the reading and the lecture are about ethanol fuel and its possible use as an alternative fuel to gasoline in the future. While the author of the reading argues that ethanol is not a decent substitute for gasoline, the professor disputes this claim. He states that actually, ethanol is a proper replacement for gasoline, and none of the reasons mentioned in the reading are not convincing. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the passage by providing three controversial reasons.
In the reading, the author begins by saying that ethanol does not solve the global warming problem as it produces carbon dioxide when it is burned. However, the professor disagrees with this idea. He asserts that ethanol is made from plants such as corn, which absorb carbon dioxide during the growth process since carbon dioxide is one of the primary vital nutrients for this process. Therefore, despite the fact that ethanol produces carbon dioxide after burning, by and large, using ethanol removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Furthermore, according to the reading, the increasing use of ethanol would significantly reduce the number of plants available for other benefits, such as animals' food, since ethanol is mainly made from plants. On the other hand, the professor points out that ethanol is produced from some parts of plants that are not eaten by animals. So, ethanol as a fuel has nothing to do with reducing animal food sources.
Finally, the author believes that ethanol is a very prohibitive fuel and is not able to compete with gasoline in price. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this assertion by contending that if ethanol become a widespread fuel and people start buying it, its cost will drop up to 40%. Even without the government's support, its price would be affordable for most people.
To sum up, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on using ethanol as an alternative fuel to gasoline.
