Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.

The reading asserts that seed clouding is an effective method to prevent hail formation by spaying the chemical silver iodide in the storm clouds from an airplane. However, the lecturer finds the idea dubious and casts doubt on each reason provided by the reading passage.
First, the author argues that several observations in the laboratory experiments, such as the formation of light snow rather than hail pallets after adding silver iodide to cold water vapor, prove that cloud seeding is an efficacious method. On the contrary, the lecturer brings up the idea that although the results are satisfying in the experiment, they are just valid for lab conditions. In practice, silver iodide prevents any precipitation even snow or rain from forming which is not favorable. Especially, in regions where the rainfall level is low, the influences caused by cloud seeding may bring about serious damages including drought and lack of water.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that cloud seeding method has been implemented in some Asian countries successfully. Accordingly, the method could be used in farms and fields of the United States as well. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that although the results have been successful in Asian countries, the method may not be practical in the US since the method has been implemented in cities where the level of pollution was high and the pollution particles' interaction with seeding materials helped the process to a large extent. On the other hand, the target regions in the US have unpolluted air and the conditions aren't favorable for cloud seeding.
Finally, the reading asserts that local studies indicate that a study in a region where cloud seeding had been used indicated a decline in hail damage in the area compared to past years. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that the decline has been monitored in other nearby regions where cloud seeding hasn't been utilized. Therefore, the decline should have been due to other factors like natural alternations in local weather and was not related to cloud seeding.
