In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.

The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.

For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full- time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.

Finally, the option of a four- day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

Both the reading and the lecture discuss about the effectiveness of four working days a week to the employee lifestyle and career development.
While the reading/passage says having the employees work 4 working days a week would benefit for both parties, the employees and companies, the lecturerr disagrees that idea and sate that it can lead to negative effect instead of haveing positive outcome.

First, the readingclaims that having four working days a week will help the employess to have more resting time and can spend more time with thier family. Doing so that the emplyees can foucs more on their works and can lead to better productivity and less error. However, the lecturer insists that having less working days will not come with all postive outcome. She states that although the employees may have shorter working days, the companies will still expect the same productive outcome that will be done in 5 working days. That may lead to have more over time working period and the employees will have mroe stress as they need to done all thoese expected output. So that, it still effects to their life style.

Second, the reading asserts that having fewer working days can reduce the human resource cost for the company. It express that sine employees agreed to take less salary to have less working days, the company can also benefit from it. In contrast, the lecturer argues that is not necessarily a good idea to reduce the cost. In order to keep the same productivity and works are done in a week, the companies will need to heir more staffs to keep the same amount of work.

Finally, the reading states that 4 working days a week will be a better option both employees and the employers. While the employees can rest more and spend time with their families, the employers can reduce the salary cost and have better error prone employees who has better focus on their work. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that it is not a good idea states that having 4 working days a week can lead to more working hours and can obstruct the employees career development as well. Morever, the companies have to heir more staffs to keep the same amout of work do be done. That can lead to the companies will need more office staffs and need to spend more money on the health benefit. So that, it will cancel out all the extra profit that came with the employees to have less working days.
