humperback whales
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in whether humpback whales use stars to navigation when they travel long distances. To begin with, the reading says that humpback whales seem intelligent enough to use stars to navigate. However, the listening argues that this explanation is not likely to be true. There are also some other animals use stars to navigate such as ducks. However, ducks are not highly intelligent, and researchers find out that this is an instinct they are born with. As a result, there are no connection between intelligence and using stars to navigate.
In addition, while the reading implies that humpback whales migrate in straight lines which is an evidence shows that they use stars to navigate, the listening suggests that this idea is also incorrect. Humpback whales travel in lines is because they sense some external force, which is earth magnetic field. Whales have some special parts in their body that can help them sense the magnetic field and orient themselves. Therefore, whales travel in straight lines is because of earth magnetic field instead of stars.
Last but not least, the reading asserts that humpback whales have a behavior call spy-hopping which can be explain by whales are looking at the stars. Whereas, the listening indicates that this is inaccurate. Some other animals, such as sharks, also have the behavior of spy-hopping, but they do this not for looking at stars to navigate, but to find their preys. Besides, researchers had find out that humpback whales usually spy-hop during the day time, when there are no stars in the sky. In other words, since other animals use spy-hopping to prey and whales spy-hop during the day, this hypothesis is not likely to be the explanation.
