Hydrogen-based fuel-cell
The passage states that hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine is a pontential replacement for the internal combustion
engine. However, the speaker provides various problems associated with fuel-cell engine.
First, the passage points out that internal-combustion engines rely on petroleum which is a finite source.
On the other hand, hydrogen needed to run fuel-cell engines is not easily depleted. Though the speaker agrees
on this point, she argues that hydrogen has to be in its liquid state to be used as fuel. As a result, it has
to be stored at -253 degree centigrade. This requires an elaborate cooling system which is not a viable option.
Second, the passage states that internal combustion engines cause a lot of pollution as they release harmful
carbondioxide into the atmosphere. However, the speaker argues that though hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine
does not produce any harmful byproducts, the process of manufacturing the hydrogen involves burning a lot of
coal and oil in the factories. Thus, using fuel-cell engines cause pollution indirectly.
Finally, the author claims that fuel-cell engines will soon become economically competitive as they are more
efficient and require only half the fuel energy as that of internal combustion engines. But the speaker contradicts
this claim by stating that the fuel-cell engines are pretty expensive to manufacture. They are manufactured
using platinum which is very expensive metal. The speaker also points out that the experiments to use a
different material to make fuel cells have also failed.
