Integrated Writing - Sound Sequence
The lecturer talks about the similarities between the sound sequence of music and that of spoken language, which is thoroughly discussed in the passage. The resemblances are their both having ordered components, syntax and evolution over time.
First, according to the author, there are independent parts in the sound flow of a language, such as syllables, words, phrases, etc. We are able to understand and learn languages since birth thanks to the logical order of these components. Similarly, the professor states music has different organized constituents: notes, chords, measures, and so on. It is also the orderly structure of instrumental sounds that helps us get the meaning of the music. In addition, as the sound system of languages accepts only a small number of sounds, the sound system of music language limits pitches within octaves.
Second, the writer mentions language has syntax, which regulates information flow and relationships. The listening indicates that music has syntax as well and it also controls and orders the flow of information to audience’s ears. Music syntax reduces the randomness of sounds and adds patterns of melody and harmony to songs, enabling us to follow what the composers wish to express.
Lastly, the reading points out changes in a spoken language over time, including the disappearance of words and the adoption of new foreign ones. Likewise, the speaker discusses the evolution of music, which is the introduction of new instruments or the depletion of technique advancement. She gives the example of American jazz being influenced by both Africans and Europeans as they inhabited close to each other in the United States.
