Integrated Writing TPO32

In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture are discussing about the strange sounds detected by Russian submarines. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the theories in the reading and provides evidences respectively to support her opinion.

First, the reading suggests the strange sounds were made by Ocra whales since there were a large population inhabit around the area where the submarines stayed. However, the lecturer purposes that though the theory is plausible, it is, in fact, highly unlikely. Because most Ocra whales live close to the surface and that the sonar should be able to detect whales, the sound should not be made by the whales.

The second theory claims that the noises were produced by giant squid given that it is reasonable to not detected by sonar due to the soft structure of squids. In contrast, it is argued in the lecture that if the noises were made by squids, it should suddenly appear in 1960s and suddenly vanished in 1980s since squids always live there.

Finally, the third theory indicates that it may be another country's submarines that made the quackers. Nonetheless, the lecturer points out that even nowadays technology, submarines are not capable of moving fast enough and having such a silent engine noise hence it is not possible the source of the quackers is from another submarine.

In conclusion, based on the evidences provided, the lecturer refutes the
points made in the reading.
