Integrated Writing TPO46

In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture discuss about the potential advantages of switching paper-based medical records to electronic ones. In fact, what is said in the lecture contradicts what is stated in the reading. The lecturer believes the advantages listed in the reading are uncertain and provides three firm evidences to support her opinion.

The first advantage stated in the reading is reducing cost specifically on storage. However, the lecturer proposes that the doctors who adopt the electronic databases still keep the paper records for legal reason and emergency use. Therefore, doctors still need to pay for the storing expense and no significant amount of money is saved.

Also, the reading points out the second advantage is preventing errors such as illegible handwriting and improper transcription. In contrast, the lecturer argues that electronic records cannot eliminate poor handwriting nor problematic transcription because doctors write prescription by hand and will need other workers to transcript and type into the computer afterwards.

Finally, the last advantage stated in the reading is aiding medical research. Nonetheless, the lecturer claims that the medical research will still be difficult since the major problem is the subject privacy issues. Since the research team still needs to go through the strict and complicated process to get the permission from patients, there is no significant aid for doing research.

In conclusion, based on the evidences provided, the lecturer refutes the
all three advantages stated in the reading.
