In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team.
Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise, and skills than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the numbers of people involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is more likely to make risky decisions that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.
Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by the decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to "shine", to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a team's overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.
The passage and the lecture offer two opposing views regarding group work. While the text lists reasons in support of group work while approaching any new projects, the professor counters those logics. He points out many drawbacks of working in a group to refute the advantages listed in the passage.
First, the professor opposes the idea that group work enables a team to perform a task more quickly and helps to take any risky decisions. According to him, it takes a lot of time and struggle to come into consensus while working in a group. Although the text mentions that the involvement of large number of people help a team to perform a new project more quickly by using the resources the group members possess, the professor thinks it is very difficult to come into an agreement in a group work.
Second, the text states that working in a team helps each individuals to shine and contribute to the accomplishment of the task. However, the professor counters this idea because group work involves the risk of free rider. While the passage support group work because of it offers a great chance for an individual to contribute in the group work, the professor counters the idea and thinks group work may put more pressure on some active members of that team as there would be some inactive members who virtually would do nothing. According to him, these inactive members would only take credit which might displease the active members as they had to share the credit of performing the task with the inactive ones.
Finally, the professor states that group work may face difficulties due to some members who might act as influencer in that group. Those influencer might force the group to take a decision which is wrong and frustrate the success of the group work. Although the text mentions group work as advantageous since it helps individual to think freely, according to the lecture group work might consist of some members who would try to have some influence on the other group members and might obstruct the progress of the group by taking wrong decisions.
