online encyclopedia

Essay topics:

online encyclopedia

the reading is about the problematic reasons of communal online encyclopedia which is a rich and modern source of information that allows people to add information and make changes in the existing ones. the professor however, disagrees with all these reasons
firstly, the reading states that online encyclopedia are not written by experts as opposed to traditional paper based encyclopedia. Therefore, these new ones are more prone to errors. the professor challenged this belief by stating that traditional ones were in fact not error free as well. and there is no such resource as perfect. but at least the online ones allow people to correct the mistakes as opposed to the traditional printed ones.
secondly the reading posits that online encyclopedia can be a target of hackers. information could be deleted or changed and there is no way a user could be informed whether the information is authentic or not. the professor refutes this idea by ensuring that essential information is available in a format that cannot be edited. Moreover, special editors check all the entries regularly to make sure of their authenticity.
Finally, the reading suggests that online encyclopedia focus too much on trivial issues. for example, a topic about a runner could take up as much space as a historical event and users might not be able to differentiate between important and trivial issues. the professor believed this is a prejudice way of thinking to decide what people should consider important. she stated that with the traditional encyclopedia there used to be a problem of space. and because space was limited only subjects that were significant in the eyes of academic authorities had a chance to be published, and it surely did not reflect the interest of people. with the new encyclopedia space is not a problem. there is endless space for any topic to be included. Thus, the diversity of these topics are so wide that anyone can find information about their topic of interest.
