online encyclopedia
The article and the lecture focus on using a communal online encyclopedia. The author points out three main disadvantages of such kind of encyclopedia compared with the traditional ones. The lecturer, however, rebuts claims made in the article. He thinks that there are certain benefits of the communal online encyclopedia.
The author begins by stating that, as community members do not have deep knowledge about the subject or are not recognized in a scientific society, the information in the communal online encyclopedia may be inaccurate. The lecturer admits that it may be the case, but traditional encyclopedias contain errors too. Moreover, it takes years to fix these errors. On the other hand, online version mistakes could be corrected faster.
Secondly, in the article, it is stated that the online encyclopedia could be used by dishonest people to manipulate information. The lecturer mentions that there are mechanisms that prevent these activities. He delves deeper and provides examples of these mechanisms. The first one is the ability to specify some articles as read-only, and the second one is to hire staff for checking changes and deleting inappropriate content.
Finally, another issue associated with the online encyclopedia is that it focuses on popular topics and can mislead readers what is really important. The lecture challenges this specific argument by asking the rhetorical question: "Who should decide what is really important?". He suggests that the diversity of material is definitely a positive aspect of the online encyclopedia. Additionally, the online version compared with the paper one has no limits of space.
