The article introduces the topic of endotherms creatures. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that dinosaurs were endotherms. In the listening passage, the lecturer points out that there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the professor believes that there is no sufficient evidence to consider dinosaurs endotherms and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that, because fossils of dinosaurs were found in the polar regions with extremely cold climate, it can be concluded that to maintain the temperature of the body these creatures should have been endotherms. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that earlier the climate in this area was much warmer than it is nowadays. Additionally, he mentions that when the climate became colder dinosaurs could have migrated to other places. So the conclusion made by the author of the reading passage is not proved.
Secondly, the author suggests that the placement of legs underneath the body of dinosaurs could prove the theory that they were endotherms. In the article, it is said that this composition of legs is suitable to perform energy-consuming activities such as running. And since all modern endotherms can run, it is reasonable to assume that dinosaurs also were endotherms. The lecturer, however, asserts that the main purpose of such a structure of body should be to support the enormous size of these creatures.
Finally, another reason why the author feels that dinosaurs were endotherms is that their bone structure contained the Haversian Canals that are the characteristics of the bones of endotherms. The professor in the listening passage provides us with a counterargument that there is evidence that the speed of growth of dinosaurs was inconstant. This proves that the growth rate was adapted to external factors such as temperature, that could not happen if they were endotherms
