The outermost layer of skin, the epidermis, produces a variety of growths in animal and bird species. Because dinosaurs were reptiles, and modern reptiles have scales and armor plates on their skin, it was long assumed that dinosaurs had the same type of skin coverings. However, dinosaurs had many traits that modern reptiles lack, and evidence gathered by paleontologists indicates that dinosaurs may have, in fact, possessed feathers like modern birds.
The reading and the lecture are about the argument that all dinosaurs possessed feathers or not. The author in the article provides three theories about the existence of feathers on the body of dinosaurs. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that all the gigantic creatures didn't had feathers and it is a false argument.
According to the reading, the ancestors of modern birds were dinosaurs. If modern birds have feathers, then it is plausible to claim that the previous generations would also be having the feathers. The article mentions that all of the birds in the world have wings, and therefore, it can be claimed from the fossil records that all of the dinosaurs possessed feathers as well. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that it can be proved that some of the theropods had wings, and therefore, it does not proves that all of the dinosaurs had feathers. Additionally, he points out that most of the dinosaurs didn't inherited from the theropods, so it would be feasible to think that not all dinosaurs had wings.
Secondly, the author suggests that fossils had verified that all of the dinosaurs possessed feathers. In the article, it is said that the fossils lucidly show how the feathers are stick to the bones. The lecturer, however, asserts that no other species had a significant evidence of feathers on them. He goes on to say that the species such as Searopods had no records of skin having feathers.
Finally, the author posits that the feathers were one of the most important need of the dinosaurs as they can utilize their feathers when there is extreme weather conditions such as cold. The author contends that, similar to the warm-blooded birds, dinosaurs would also have used the feathers to keep them warm. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that dinosaurs used gigantothermy as their means of maintaining temperature. The temperature of the large dinosaurs would not change internally even if there is cold outside.
