The passage and the lecture is about originality of Jane Austens’ full-length portrait. The author of the article shows 3 evidence of it, but the speaker convinces that they can be hardly proved.
Firstly, the passage states that Austen’s family approved the usage of Jane’s portrait as an illustration on her letters and they confirmed that she is pictured on the paining. The lecturer, on the other hand, does not agree with this statement because the portrait was published 70 years after the death of the novelist, so her family has never seen her alive, so they can not say for sure is she on the picture or not.
Secondly, the writer tells that the face of Jane on the portrait is similar to the sketch of Cassandra, who depict Jane. However, the speaker says that the novelist’ family was large and there were a lot of female cousins and children. Also she mentioned that this sketch resembles the work of Marian Campien, and it could be a niece of Jane on it.
Thirdly, the passage argues that this piece of art looks like it was painted by Ozias Humphrey, the painter, who was hired by rich Austen’s family exactly at those time when Jane was a teenager. In contrast the lecturer mentions that’s the sign one the cloth, which was used on the painting, was bought when Austen was 27 years old, that is why she could not be pictured on this portrait.
