A passage with examples of altruist acts of an animal and human are opposed in a lecture( how they are not actually selfless)
The lecture suggest counter points regarding the purpose of an altruistic act. A meerkat who actually stands guard has eaten before, so his stomach is quite full, comparative to other meerkats who are scattered. Also the sentinel meerkat is more safe as he stands near a burrow where he can hide quickly whenever the danger like a predating hawk is near. The other meerkats are in more danger as they instantly have no place to hide. Also sentinel meerkat has an additional advantage. When it sounds the alarm, other meerkats will either group together or run to and fro, which will divert the attention of hawk away from the sentinel and towards the other meerkats.
In case of humans, when they do something unselfish like donate their organs to relatives or strangers, the purpose of doing so is not exactly selfless. The donator, in return, will get some reward, compliment or just self-satisfaction by donation their organs to others. Even though the rewards or aftermath of donating is not material, but it still makes donator feel good. So the donator is indeed gaining some form of profit from his "altruism".
These above points made in the lecture opposes the point made in passage that "Individuals performing altruistic acts gain nothing." In both cases, the sentinel meerkat has gained food and security and humans have gained self-satisfaction.
