Practice test 8-w1
The reading claims that wearing uniform is an excellent way of reducing stress and difficulties among students. The professor concedes that the author's points about reducing difficulties can be true, but except of this point, nothing much was correctly discussed in the article. So, she refutes each of author's reasons.
First, the reading posits that families and students would benefit from this policy because it would decrease the clothing cost. The lecturer opposes this point by stating that students' parents would still spend the extra money on fashionable clothes. She explains that uniforms are not provided for free. And, parents have to pay more for them. Also, because uniforms are sold in specialty stores with higher prices, so they have to pay even more. She adds that uniforms are not the only clothes that students wear, meaning they still need fashionable clothes for the weekends, when they hang out with other students or friends.
Second, the article asserts that wearing uniform will eliminate the unnecessary distraction. The lecturer contends that wearing same clothes will not eliminate the distraction. She explains that students use fashinable clothes to emphasize attractive things and untrendy clothes to deemphasize the unattractive things. So, by replacing regular clothing with uniforms, they will focus on other things. For instance, they will focus on how themselves or other students look. Plus, they will alter the uniforms to make them look in a way that they want.
Third, the reading avers that uniforms will help students to develop a sense of community. The professor refutes this point by mentioning that this point is the least responsible reason. She says that there is no way to build a community by just wearing same clothing. She states that students communicate their individuality by wearing different clothes. Forcing students to wear uniforms is going to suffocate their independency and the sense of being themselves. So, it should be avoided.
