The Principle of Scientific Management
In his book, The Principles of Scientific Management (1991), Frederick Winslow Taylor proposed a method that aims at improving the productivity of workers in factories.
It is stated in the passage that the first step proposed by Mr. Taylor is a thorough study of time-and-motion in factories that is dedicated to calculate the time spent by workers to accomplish their respective jobs. The professor casts doubt on this idea by arguing that this practice does not benefit factories because it consumes money as inspectors are necessary for the study to be conducted.
The author claims that according to Taylor's principles, all workers would be required to work extensively in order to reform the productivity of lower-skilled workers. The professor counters this by saying that following Taylor's principles, low-skill workers were asked to perform tasks at an irrealistic pace. As a result, most of them were not appreciative of the study that they would attempt to stop the ongoing study.
Another principle of Taylor was that high-skilled workers' jobs would be broken in chunks so that lower-skilled can be able to replace them. The profesor diagrees with this statement and stated that it would not improve the efficiency of the factory because high-skilled workers will no longer enjoy high salaries. As a matter of fact, specialized workers will attempt to substitute these scientific management methods in jobs.
