problems with the genetically modified trees

Essay topics:

problems with the genetically modified trees

The reading asserts that genetic modification of trees can be beneficial, as these genetically modified trees can produce more fruits, grow faster, withstand adverse conditions. However, the lecturer finds the idea dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the author of the reading.

The author argues that the odds of survival are in favor of genetically modified trees, for they can be designed to be hardier than the regular trees and they can be modified to be against pests. In contrast, the professor brings up the fact that being resistant to something does not necessarily mean that the chances of survival are high in these trees. Additionally, she asserts that there are different kinds of natural trees as they do not have uniform genes, some of which resistant to different hazards that threaten them. On the other hand, the genes of the genetically modified trees are uniform, which would expose them to getting wiped out by a potential climate change or a new pest.

Furthermore, the author holds the view that these genetically modified trees have economic benefits for farmers, because of their fast growth rate and greater yields of fruits. On the contrary, the professor underlies the fact that the companies, in which the genes of these trees are getting modified, charge farmer considerably higher than what they would pay for the natural seeds and for each time farmer want to plant these seeds they must pay these companies again, which is not economical.

Finally, the author claims that by using genetically modified trees for firewood and building timber purposes, we can refrain the overexploitation of wild trees and save forests. Conversely, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that genetically trees are going to be planted among natural trees and because of their high rate of grows it is of the likelihood that they would prevail over the natural ones and eventually wipe them out.
