Professors appearing on television

Essay topics:

Professors appearing on television

The reading and the lecture discuss whether professors' appearances on television are beneficial or not. While the reading suggests that these appearances are beneficial for professors, universities and people; the lecture opposes this claim.

First, the reading states that by going on television professors gain reputation outside the academia. The lecture, on the other hand, contradicts this idea by suggesting that these professors are considered in the academia as not seriou enough. Moreover, there is a high probability that they may not be invited to important scientific conferences or may have a hard time to raise funds to finance their researches.

Second, another point that the reading makes to support the proffesors who go on television is that the universities, where they teach, also benefit; because this is a very positive way of marketing. The lecture, on the contrary, refutes this idea by saying that professors waste a lot of time travelling or rehearsing before going to the media. It adds on to say that instead they should be reaserching, spending more time with students in office hours, or helping the business part of university.

Third, the reading also suggests that public gains a lot of knowledge about a topic from a university proffesor, who is an expert on a subject. The lecture, however, opposes this idea by saying that the media does not want to cover subjects in depth. Furthermore, according to the lecture, professors are used only to make titles look better for the viewers; not to actually discuss the substance of a specific problem.

Overall, this issue whether professors should express their opinions in mediums, such as, television is still open to debate.
