Professors on Television
The passage suggests three reasons for the professor to appear on T.V. programs; to gain reputation for the professor, publicity for the University and benefits for the viewers of the television program. However, the lecture disagrees with these points presented in the passage.
Firstly, the author of the passage says that by being on television the professor can increase his/her reputation. The lecturer attacks this claim by stating that usually a professor who appears on T.V. is not considered a serious researcher by his/her peers and so might not be invited to state of the art conferences. Thus, by being on T.V negatively impacts the reputation of a professor.
Secondly, the passage states that if professor appears on T.V it can help University as more people will become aware of the University and in turn more applications will be send to the University. The lecturer refutes this claim by mentioning that the time a professor spends on a TV station might be better spend educating students of the University.
Furthermore, the passage suggests being on TV might help educate more people regarding cutting edge research. This claim of the author is also belied by the lecturer stating that usually professors don't go in depth of the topics and their television programs are limited to crux of the topic. Additionally, it is also mentioned the information provided by the professor on television programs can easily be conveyed by an informed reporter.
