Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

The reading states that, the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team and provide some reasons to support it. However, the professor gives an example of an organisation where this approach was not considered as the best way. and refutes each of aritcles reasons.

First, the reading states the a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise and skills than any single individual is likely to possess. The professor refutes that some people do not contribute at all in a project done by a group of people. He gives an example of an organisation that employed the team approach of doing work and after six months an evaluation of the projects was done. It was found that every team had some free riders that didnt contributed to the task at all. The people who did work hard for the projects were not given recognition for their hard work and the praise of the successful task completion was given to the whole team.

Second, the reading posits that a group can work more quickly towards a task. However the professor says that working in a group takes more time to complete a task. According to him, the group does not come to consensus quickly. Several meetings needs to be made before people reach to an agreement on how to move forward with a project. This increases the the time of completing the task.

Third, the reading says that individual team member has a chance to shine to get his contributions and ideas be considered as highly significant. The professor disputes this by stating that during the course of projects, some influencers are formed in a group and their decisions are over valued over other team members. So even if the some of the team members warn the team against the influencers decisions, those warnings are rejected by the team. Upon failure, the whole team is blamed rather than just the influencers.
