Recently, there has been a debate about the private collectors. Private collectors are persons interested in selling and buying animals fossils. Are they have a good or bad impact on the science?. The author in the reading passage raises three strong points against private collectors, While the professor in the reading passage seriously challenges these points.
First of all, the author assumes that private collectors approach may decrease public chance to see fossils and reduce their access to them. Conversely, the lecturer contends that private collectors make fossils more accessible to the public. Furthermore, every time that they sell fossils, the schools, universities, and anyone interesting in fossils can come and see them or buy them as well. So the lecture gives another side of view regarding fossils access.
Second, the reading material claims that private collectors decrease scientists opportunity to make new discoveries, as they trade these fossils for their own sake. However, the professor opposes this idea by saying that each fossil, in order to be evaluated has to pass through scientists. More ever, scientists only can say if these fossils worth money or not. So, scientists access to fossil would be crucial in this process. Thus, the lecture successfully argues the second point in the text.
Finally, the author has a concern regarding the damaging to fossils that may happen during the excavation because of the lack of experiences of private collectors. Admittedly, the professor assumes the truth of this concern but, on the other hand, he questions if private collectors do not search for fossil, then, who would do that?. Universities and private constitution do not have enough money to do all these steps. Therefore, we have to accept small damage in order to get benefits from the huge amount of fossils that have discovered by private collectors.
Ideally, the lecture has given strong evidence to argue against the theories that have been raising by the author about the harmless of private collectors on science.
