Robert E Peary was a well known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole When he returned from the expedition he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7 1909 This report made him into an international celebrity

Both the reading and the listening discuss the credibility of the claim made by the explorer Robert E. Peray that he reached the North Pole on 07th April, 1909. The author believes that Peay's claim is correct and provides three reasons for support. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. She is of the opinion none of the se reasons are convincing.
To begin with, the author suggests that  the National Geographic Society formed committee declared that Peary's claim is accurate. This declaration was announced
that  based on the intensive investigation that was performed by the committee. The lecturer challenges this specific argument by asserting that the committee was not objective and the members of this committee were Peary's close friends and some of them financially sponsored Peray's expedition. In addition, She mentions that the committee took only two days to examine the records and even Peary mentioned that the committee did not examine the records carefully. Therefore, their conclusion is biased and untrustworthy.
Secondly, the writer argues that the success of the recent expedition of  Tom Avery  supports that Peary reached the North Pole in 37 days since all the conditions and equipment were similar. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by claiming that Avery's expedition was too different, because the dogsled carried less weight and the food had been dropped from planes and also the weather was favorable. On the other hand, Peary's expedition was in unfavorable conditions and he carried a huge amount of food. As a result, this argument is irrelevant and Peary's claim is not correct.
Finally, the author posits that measuring the shadows in the photograph that Peray took in the North Pole indicate the right position of the sun on that day. Thus, Peary was honest in claiming that  he successfully reached the North Pole. In contrast, the lecturer, cast doubt on this claim by pointing out that the technique used to measure the shadows was not precise. In addition, she states that this photo was taken 100 years ago with a primitive camera and for sure it is a fuzzy photo and all the shadows are blurred and faded that can not be used to provide accurate measure. So, we can not trust this results and Peary's was not truthful.
