Essay topics:

The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake’s water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake’s water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake’s water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake’s health.

Both the reading passage and the listening material discuss the issue of the high level of salt in the Salton Sea in California. While the reading passage proposes three possible methods to reduce the salt level to protect the lake's ecosystem, the speaker refutes that those methods are unrealistic and impractical based on the following reasons.
To begin with, the reading passage notes that by utilizing desalination facilities, salt can be removed from the lake. With desalination facilities, water evaporates to steam, leaving salt and other materials behind. However, the speaker points out that this proposal includes serious health problems. She further indicates that the remaining materials may contain toxic chemicals. If the wind blows those harmful chemicals into the air, it will damage people's health.
In addition, according to the reading part, delivering ocean water, which includes a lower salt level, to mix it with the lake water declines the level of salt in the Salton Sea. Nevertheless, the speaker challenges this idea by arguing that it is too money-consuming. The lake is 100km away from the ocean. Therefore, it is too expensive for the government to build such long pipelines or canals to transport seawater to the lake.
Last but not least, the author of the reading passage suggests constructing walls to divide the lake into several parts of different sizes. This is to remain at a high salt level in the small sections and make the major sections stay at a low salt level by directing freshwater into them. In contrast, the speaker maintains that this method will not work for long. Since there are intense geographical activities nearby, such as earthquakes, the walls might collapse soon. Therefore, the water of salty parts will mix with that of the fresher parts, destroying the whole plan.
