According to the reading passage, it is stated that the salinity level of the Salton Sea in California is increasing continually due to its faster rate of water evaporation compared to the amount of water that comes from rainfall or rivers. Hence, it provides some solutions to deal with this problem. However, the professor in the listening states why the ideas presented in the reading passage were not practical and refutes them by describing three reasons as follows.
Firstly, the reading claims that the high amount of salt can be removed directly from lake's water by using some special desalination facilities. The professor casts doubt on this point by saying that although this approach eliminates water's salt, it causes some serious problems to the human health. He states that when water evaporates, besides salt it leaves out some solid material. These materials may be some other types of chemicals, which can be combined with other elemnts like air and create some dangerous problems for humans breathing the air.
Secondly, the article posits that another solution is diluting the salt level by adding some ocean water. In contrast, the professor says that this process requires constructing some pipelines and canals, which would be very expensive; because the distance between the lake and Pacific Ocean is nearly ine hundred kilometers.
Finally, the reading recommends another solution of constructing some walls to divide the lake into several sections in order to control the salinity. The professor opposes this point by explaining that this practice is unlike to work for a long period. According to the professor, if a natural disaster like earthquake occurs in the region, these walls will be collapsed and destroyed. As a result, water from low salinity area will mix back with high salinity section.
