Both the passage and the lecture are about the graded school systems of learning. While the author of the text explains about what the graded learning system is and how it structures students based on their chronological age. The lecturer, however, points out the problems associated with the graded system of schooling.
As per the text, the schooling typically starts in the first grade and educates the children through twelve successive grades. Professor points out that since first grade starts at the age of six for most students in the graded system, it doesn't take into account the academic readiness of the child. He believes that a child may not be ready physically, socially and mentally to start schooling at that young age. Additionally, most of the children may still be physically and socially immature by the time they complete twelve successful grades of schooling.
Secondly, the reading pushes forth the fact that the students who do not qualify the eligibility criteria for promotion into next grade are asked to repeat the same grade for another year. Professor contends that the promotion system has fallacies and need to be reviewed. It doesn't deal with actual learning of the students. Moreover, the failed students need to repeat the same course completely for another year which may feel boring to them. This, he posits, may lead to high dropout rates. Furthermore, he argues that this system makes the weak students to study the whole syllabus again and makes the strong ones to wait for the next grade's classes.
To summarize, the professor successfully lists the serious shortcomings involved with the graded method of education as it doesn't deal with the actual learning of the students.
