According to the reading passage, it is stated that although some successful missions to Moon have happened in the history, sending humans to Mars is still very challenging. The problems of traveling to Mars are due to its further distance from Earth, which the article clearly elaborates on them. However, the professor in the listening states why the assumptions mentioned in the reading passage were not correct and refutes them by describing three solutions for the problems as follows.
Firstly, the reading claims that since it take two years to go to Mars and come back, the cargo capacity to put on required resources such as food, water and oxygen for two years, will not be enough. The professor casts doubt on this point by saying that recently, researchers have found a technique called ''Hydroponics'' to solve this problem. She goes on to say that, it is a technique of growing plants in the water rather than in soil, which takes less space. Therefore, not only the crew they won't have the problem of food shortage but also by recycling the waste water of growing plants, they will be able to have drinking water. Furthermore, according to the photosynthesis process of plants, astronauts will get the amount of oxygen they need.
Secondly, the article posits that spending two years in the zero-gravity environment of space have hazardous effects on human body, like decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. In contrast, the professor says that most of the astronauts, who have experiences of staying months in space stations, know how to prevent these problems by using some methods. She states, for instance, regular exercise can hamper muscle mass decreasing.
Finally, the reading says that other problem of missions to Mars are exposure to perilous levels of space radiation, most of which are particles emitted by sun. The professor opposes this point by explaining that radiation levels are not dangerous all the time. According to the professor, special equipments can be installed to the spaceships in order to detect the increased radiation times and warn astronauts to stay in shielded area until the danger will pass.
