The author says that sending human to mars would require solving problems that the moon mission did not have to face. However the professor claims that although the Mars mission is challenging, there are many proposed solutions for the mentioned problems in the passage.
Firstly, the author averts that because a round-trip to Marsand back is likely to take at least two years, so it is so hard to carry supplies such as food, water and oxygen on the spacecraft vehicle for this long time. Whereas, the professor says that instead of carrying supplies into the spacecraft, there is a technique called Hydroponic, which is technique for growing plant in space, would help astronauts to cultivate food, recycle water vapor of plants to clean water, and absorb carbon dioxide then release oxygen. That's why, hydroponic technique can help to solve the problem of carrying supplies to Mars for a long time.
Secondly, the author claims that the gravity on Mars is zero, therefore exposing to zero gravity for many months would create negative effect on human body such as decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. However, the professor says that there are several techniques to manage the muscle mass and bone density of human body. Firstly, doing regular exercises. Secondly, taking vitamins and minerals that contain calcium will help to slow down the decreasing of muscle mass. That's why, there are affected strategies astronauts can follow to avoid the problems of exposing to zero gravity for many months.
Thirdly, the author averts that because there is no layer of protection from the dangerous radiation of the sun on Mars, the mission to Mars would be dangerous for astronauts. On the other hand, the professor says that dangerous level of radiation by the sun occurs occasionally, and astronauts can avoid it by using instruments to monitor solar radiation and by staying in small shielder area untill the dangerous of sun radiation is passed.
