There is some disagreement between the author of the writing and the lecturer over the issue of whether sending humans to Mars would be more difficult than sending them to the Moon or not. The author states that since Mars is 150 times farther than Moon, it would introduce several issues that did not occur during the trip to the Moon, while the lecturer thinks otherwise.
The first problem according to the text is that unlike the trip to the Moon, the astronauts would need at least 2 years of food, water and oxygen and there would be simply not enough space in a spaceship to carry 2 years of supplies. The lecturer elaborates on this by introducing the idea of putting hydroponics inside the spaceship. She continues by explaining that hydroponics would take less space, and would also recycle water, providing clean water. Additionally, they would also turn carbon dioxide into fresh air. In other words, hydroponics would solve all space problems that could occur during the mission.
Secondly, the author posits that many months spent in zero gravity environment during the journey to Mars would have many negative effects on human body such as lower bone density, and it would simply make the trip impossible without having severe medical problems. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this argument by stating that astronauts have found several techniques to overcome the symptoms of spending a long time in a zero gravity environment. She puts forth the idea that by exercising and taking mineral pills, astrounauts would have no trouble staying in the spaceship for a long while.
Finally, the author states that the particles released by the Sun would cause too much solar radiation for the astrounauts. The writing also notes that a shield to protect the spaceship from this radiation would be too heavy. Conversely, the lecturer refutes the aforementioned statement. She says that the Sun releases solar radiation only occasionally and argues the use of a shield for the whole spaceship could be avoided by using instruments that monitor the solar radiation and a small shielded area inside the spaceship. Astronauts would stay in the shielded area until the danger passes.
In conclusion, the lecture effectively casts doubt on all of the claims presented in the passage.
