There are two different hypothesis made for the reason behind the decline of the sea otter population in western coast of North America. One is the increased level of pollution in such areas and the other is the orca which appears as the hunter of sea otter. While the reading believes the former to be the main reason of the decline, the lecturer gives some other information that supports the latter cause.
The first reason mentioned in the reading for supporting the pollution role is about investigating the areas which the decline is more and those seem to be where chemical pollution exist. The lecturer believes that if these species have died due to the pollution, we should have found the remained bodies of these creatures which we have not.
The second reason to back up the first theory is the decline of other sea species in this area such as seals and sea lions. The only exception is orcas which could resist the effect. This has been described as the reason for the second theory by the lecturer. The decline of the main prey of orcas which are whales resulted in hunting of the other species like seals and otters.
The last reason is the iregular pattern of decline. The lecturer believes this as another supporting information for the hunting idea. The otters disappeared in locations where orcas could reach and hunt them but not in the shallow waters which was unreachable by orcas.
