The reading discusses altruism as a valuable behavior among animals and humans which is to act for the benefit of others rather than yours. It uses some examples of altruism among homo sapiens and another type of mammal called meerkat which is believed to have a great sense of unselfish manners. The lecturer refers to some new information about this animal and refutes the belief of altruism among them.
As we understand from the passage, during the hunting for food, a member of meerkats would act as a guardian and stays alert for any predator that may endanger the group by screaming. It is described as a altruistic act due to the high level of getting hunted by a predator and also losing the chance to eat. As we we hear from the lecturer, the new facts are uncovered by scientists that shows the opposite. It is revealed that the meerkats would not stay as guards before they start to eat and the guarded has a better chance to escape because it has been alerted faster than others and also the alarm cry would act as a defensive act that would keep the predator away from it.
The lecturer also believes that the behavior of humans is not unselfish either. The humans who would share food or donate a body organ, would do these acts because they like to be awarded a sense of self-worth from the society.
