The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about Spartacus and if he is a hero or not. The writer of the text, by providing three reasons, states that Spartacus was a hero. However, the lecturer opposes with these reasons and explains that these stories are not accurate and the mentioned reasons in the text is inaccurate for the following reasons.
First of all, both the passage and the speaking put forth the goal of Spartacus. The writer of the passage claims that Spartacus and his men wanted to return to their homeland, since they were brought up to rome and uprooted from their own land. On the other hand, the professor refutes this notion and says that Spartacus and his men did not have just that goal. After the first battle, where they won, they could escape, but they decided to march toward rome and invade there. Hence, they did not want to go home, instead they wanted to take revenge and get wealth and gold.
Second of all, both the article and the listening put forward that Spartacus was genius or not. The author of the passage points out that Spartacus and his men defeated romans with small and ill-equipped army, while the romans had large and highly trained soldiers. The speaker, in contrast, casts doubt about this and explains that romans did not take it seriously at the first and sent poorly equipped units to fight with Spartacus. So, Spartacus and his men defeated this army, but when the rome sent a well-equipped army, Spartacus lost the battle. Hence, he is not genius.
Thirdly, both the reading and the lecture point out that Spartacus wanted to liberate the slaves or not. The author of the article claims that Spartacus wanted to liberate all roman slaves. The lecturer, conversely, posits that this story is not backed by historical records and created later. She adds that, this story is created by anti slavery people in 18 century, where they wanted a hero to inspire them. So, this is just an inspiration story and not backed by historical truth.
