What are the uses of the salvage logging?
The reading and lecture are both about salvage logging method, which the author of reading believes that this method can be useful to damaged forests, but the lecture challenges the statement made by the author. The professor is of the opinion that this way has damages in the long time and argued the reasons provided by the reading.
First of all, the author suggests that forests that have dead tress cause woods to decompose and there are no spaces for making new trees, so the salvage can remove dead trees and crate new spaces for fresh growth. This idea is challenged by the lecture. She says that cleaning up dead trees dose not necessary to make new room for growth. Furthermore, she explains that wood decomposition is very good for soil because soil reached by this process and it can provide critical nutrients for growth.
Secondly, the writer contends that decaying woods are a perfect place for insects. The article notes some insects such as the bark beetle in large populations can be detrimental for healthy trees. The lecture, however, rebuts this by asserting that the bark beetles have lived for years without any damage to tress. Also, she elaborates on this by mentioning that decaying trees create a suitable habitat for other insects and birds which have significant role in health of trees.
Finally, it is stated in the article that salvage logging has economic advantages because many industries produce their production by the forests. The lecture, on the other hand, posits that the system has small benefits for industries and cannot be depending on this method. She mentions that in severely damaged forests can extract lumbers by using vehicles like helicopter.
