Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The passage states that companies should offer their employees an option to work four days per week. It believes that it's beneficial for both companies and individuals, and provides three reasons for support. But the professor refutes this idea and states that offering a four-day week option won't affect the company profits, employee's life, and economy positively.
First, the passage says that a four-day week will increase company profits. But the professor opposes this point by saying that, working four-day week might force companies to spend even more. Adding new workers needs extra training and medical costs, and medical costs are the same for both four-day or five-day workers. Furthermore, new workers need more office spaces and more computers which increases costs. As a result company profits will cut down.
Second, the passage states that working four-day week will be beneficial to the economy too, and it will reduce the unemployment rate. On the other hand, the professor believes that the unemployment rate won't cut by providing a four-day week option. He explains that hiring new employees is costly and probably companies won't do this. Instead, they might force their employees to work overtime. It might increase the company’s expectations from employees to do a five-days job in four days. So this won't add new jobs, also it will make the current job more unpleasant.
Third, the passage asserts that employees will have more free time, and their quality of life will increase. However, the professor casts doubt on this point by saying that, it's true that workers' free time will increase, but it might increase the risks in their lives. It will decrease job stability and the chance of advancement in careers. The lecturer adds that four-days working employees are vulnerable to losing their job in the economic depression. Also, they will be passed over in promotions because companies prefer five-days workers in promoting to management positions since they can do supervisory in the entire week.
