summarize the points made in the lecture about elephants special abilities and behaviors, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading about elephants surprising behaviors.

The reading discusses popular beliefs about surprising behaviors of elephants. However, the professor in the lecture believes that these attributes are not satisfactionally understood by humans. She disagrees with the explanations made in the reading and provides three reasons to refute each of them respectively.

First, the article states that elephants are aware of their death time and they leave their original herd at that period and stay in areas near water. In contrast, the professor opposes with this view and illustrates that older elephants usually migrate to regions near water, since they experience some problems with their teeth and they need to find softer food to handle their severe condition. These soft foods are mostly located in areas near lakes and wet regions where elephants prefer to spend their time at older ages.

Second, the passage assumes that there might be a paint brush inside elephants’ trunks which would assist them in painting on a canvas. In contrary, she insists that this could not be true, because elephants draw painting mainly under supervision of their teachers who guides them by poking a sharp tool in their ears to point out their mistakes. In this way, elephants would understand and correct their painting style. Therefore, most of the artistic ability of elephants are taught to them rather than being an intrinsic capability.

Third, the reading regards that elephants have a general fear of mice. On the other hand, professor demonstrates that elephants fear from unfamiliar species like mice. For example, elephants that are kept in a zoo never showed any fearful attitude toward mice, since they know them during their time in the zoo. So, fearing from mice can not be attributed to all elephants that live in various environments.
