summarize the points made in the lecture about salts problem in sea, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific solutions provided in the reading for solving salts problem.

The reading discusses possible solutions for reducing salt concentration in Salton sea located in California. However, the professor in the lecture thinks that these solutions are not generally realistic and would not be practical. She provides three reasons to refute each of the assumptions made in the reading section respectively.

First, the article states that the extra salt present in the sea can be removed by applying special desalination facilities. In contrast, professor believes that these systems may raise serious problems for the environment around this Lake. By extracting salt from the sea, other solid minerals which could not be removed from the sea would increase inside the remained water and introduce various threats for the people who live near the area. For example, concentration of selenium would increase significantly in the water which may consequently cause dangerous issues for humans.

Second, the passage explains that fresh water can be transferred from ocean to dilute the salt accumulated in the sea. On the other hand, the professor insists that this policy can not be feasible, since the government could not support its huge funding. It would take a lot of money to construct canals and river roads alongside with pumping systems that can transfer water from one hundred kilometers away which seems quit impossible.

Third, the reading regards that making walls can control the salt concentration and prevent its increase in main central area. In contrary, she opposes with this solution and reminds that this work can only help the sea in short term, because severe earthquakes happen frequently in the area which can ruin all the dividing walls built for controlling the salts. Therefore, this could only be considered as a short term solution normally.
