Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge specific theories presented in the reading passage.
First, according to the author, the 52-hertz whale may be a hybrid, and that is why its song is unique. Nevertheless, the speakerargues that it is unlikely that the 52-hertz whale is a hybrid. Typically all hybrid whales follow the migration patterns of non-hybridwhales, which means they usually travel with normal whales. However, scientists, by studying the 52-hertz whale's song, havedetermined that it does not migrate with other whales, but has an unusual migration pattern and travels alone.
Second, while the author suggests that poor hearing or deafness has led to the uniqueness of the 52-hertz whale's song, thespeaker claims that a damaged sense of hearing cannot be a good explanation for one important feature of the song, its highpitch. This is because just like humans, the pitch of a whale's song depends on the physical structure of its throat, its vocalapparatus. To produce such a high-pitched song, the 52-hertz whale must have a special throat structure, which neverthelesscannot be caused by a damaged sense of hearing as typically there is no connection between hearing and throat structure.
Third, despite the author's statement that the fact that the 52-hertz whale might be the only known member of a rare speciesmakes its song seem unusual, the speaker contends that this theory does not hold water. Even if the species was rare, thewhales must have had parents who would have produced the same unusual song. However, the technology which has beenused for decades to detect whale sounds have not picked up such special sounds before, which rules out the possibility that the52-hertz whale comes from a rare species.
