The reading and the lecture are both about the aquatic zebra mussels that invaded to Great Lakes and many other American lakes and rivers which are native to Russia. The author of the reading passage feels that zebra mussels cause several problems that cannot be solved. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author of the reading passage. She is of the opinion that these problems should be solved at the time they occurred.
To begin with firstly, the author argues that zebra mussels attach themselves in a way to the bottom of boats and water pipes that enables them to travel in an easy way. The article mentions that these actions have consequences such as blocking of water pipes, some of which are used to bring drinking water to cities, that cost the city governments huge amounts of money to unblock them. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that sailors can kill them when these mussels are in the boat. Additionally, she says that when the zebra mussels entered the lakes or rivers, the waters must be sterilized until they arrived water pipes.
Finally, the author posits that zebra mussels have few natural enemies that can eliminate them; so it means that it is difficult to clean the water from them. Moreover, it is stated in the article that because of the nonexistence of natural predators, scientists are intended to discover an environmentally-safe way to kill the zebra mussels. In contrast, the position of the lecturer is that there are enough predators to kill the zebra mussels. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that if the scientists are able to increase the populations of these predators, these zebra mussels will be killed as soon as possible.
