Essay topics

The reading and the lecture are both about cloud seeding for preventing hail in farmlands. The author feels that there are evidences about that cloud seeding will be effective. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that these evidences have some flaws.
Initially granted, the author argues that laboratory experiments prove that this way is effective. The article mentions that by adding silver iodide to cold water, they observed snow forming instead of hail. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that cloud seeding process can also prevent snow, rain, and hail, too. She says that this process is done in the places where it does not rain often and after this process there can be observed water shortage.
Secondly, the writer suggests that this process is effectively tested in urban areas of Asia. In the article, it is stated that positive results of controlling precipitation can be evidence for effectiveness of the process. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that because this process is tested in urban areas, it cannot be repeated in farmlands of United States. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that high pollution in urban areas created favorable conditions for preventing the hail, interrupting the damage.
Finally, the author posits that local studies also support the value of cloud seeding. It is said in the article that they can monitor the crop damage due to hail. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that cloud seeding also decreased precipitation in neighboring cities. She notes that reduced hail amount in farmlands and surrounding cities is the result of the natural variation in local weather.
