Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage: long-standing misconceptions in elephants has led to several beliefs about surprising elephant behaviors. 1- Elephants Are Aware of Approaching Death 2- Representing Objects through Art 3- Fear of Mice
The reading and the lecture are both about elephant behaviors, which are fascinated by some people, assuming elephants have high intelligent. The author of the reading believes there are three cases of unusual characteristics of elephants. The lecturer challenges that statements made by the author. she is of the opinion that they are caused by misunderstandings.
First of all, the author suggest that elephants predict and know their incoming death. it is mentioned that when elephants realize that their death is approaching, they stay away from their herd and come closer to bodies of water. that's the reason why many sites of old elephant bones are found. The argument is refuted by the lecturer. she says the reason is more practical reason. Furthermore, she argues that when elephants are old, their tooth are worn down. As a result, they look for soft vegetables, and such soft vegetables are found near water.
Secondly, the article posits that elephants have talent of painting. The author notes elephants are able to draw paintings by their trunks, and their paintings are sometimes recognizable. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that most elephants that can draw are trained by humans. she elaborates on this by mentioning that the ears of elephants are very sensitive, and trainers teach them to paint which they don't consciously aware of by striking their ears.
Finally, it is stated in the reading that elephants are afraid of mice. The author establishes that there is a known case that herd of elephants were backed away upon seeing mice. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes that the fear is not caused by mice themselves. she puts forth the idea that this behavior of elephants is caused by their unfamiliarity with mice. In fact, elephants in the place where mice are common don't even react to mice.
