summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the points that what might have caused the extinction of the sea cows mentioned in the reading passage
In the reading passage, the author discusses three theories about the main cause of the sea cow's extinction around Bring Island, while the lecture claims that what the passage state is not convincing and disputes those ideas presented in the passage with several proofs.
Firstly, according to the reading passage, it is suggested that the sea cows may have been overhunted by groups of native Siverian people since the sea cows were a good source of food in a harsh environment for native people. In contrast, the professor argues in the lecture that the sea cows were massive animals which could grow up to 9 meters long and weigh over 10 tons. And a couple of sea cows could feed a small Siberian for month. Because the population of native Siberians was not large, they did not need to hunt a lot of sea cows. Therefore, the native residents should not be held accountable for the extinction of the sea cows.
In addition, the statement in the reading material indicates that the sea cow population may have become extinct because of ecosystems disturbances that caused a decline in their main source of food, kelp. On the contrary, the professor points out that if the ecosystem had happened severe disturbances, there were other animals such as kelp would die. Scientists already found whales which lived at the same time had kept growing fine. Hence, the kelp could not largely perish and the sea cows could not lack of food.
Finally, the author of the reading claims that the main cause of extinction of the sea cows could have been European fur traders who came to the island after 1742. However, the speaker argues that the extinction of the sea cows happened before the fur traders got to the island because the population of the sea cows had been small before they arrived. There must be one thing happen before the traders went to that place and it mainly caused the sea cows disappeared.
