Essay topics:

summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

What the reading passage and the lecture both debate on is whether there are realistic solutions to stop the increasing salinity of The Salton Sea. While the passage emphasizes that the three ways to reverse the threatened health of the lake to be practical, the lecture, however, challenges all the points made in the passage.
Firstly, the lecture demonstrates that while installing a desalination facilitiy to remove salt and other materials by heating the water mentioned in the passage can stop the trend, it will cause serious health problems. When the lake water is heated it leaves behind solid materials which include toxic chemical elements in addition to salt. These toxic materials will spread by wind and cause damages on people who breathe in this chemical.
Secondly, the lecture points out that the idea to dilute the lake with water from the ocean through pipelines as stated in the passage will cost too much that the government cannot afford them. There are no enough resources to pay for such long pipelines which will be about a hundred kilometer.
Third, the lecture mentions that the solution argued in the passage to divide the lake into a small area which remains high salinity and a large main area which is diluted by the freshwater will work out only for a short term. The place the lake sits is where the geographical accidents such as earthquakes occur frequently, so that the walls will collapse by the earthquakes and the high salinated water will flow back to the lower salinated area again.
