Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage introduces the topic of eco-certification, a certificate issued by the international organization to the wood companies following high ecological standards by recycling and conserving the resources. The passage further explains the reasons for the US-based companies not to adopt ecological standards for eco-certification. However, the lecturer disagrees with the reasons presented by the passage for the reasons which I will explain in the following paragraphs.
In the reading passage, the author states that the American customers do not trust the advertisements and hence they will not pay attention to the eco-certification. The professor, however, disagrees with this viewpoint. He states that Americans trust the advertising claims made by independent consumer agencies about any product of a company. So, if a product is advertised as eco-certified by these agencies, then it might attract consumers to the product’s company.
Furthermore, the passage claims that eco-certification might make the wood company charge high prices to the American customers who will prefer cheap wood products from uncertified wood companies instead of the costlier ones. Again, the professor believes that there are flaws in this argument. If there are many competing wood companies, then only the customers will buy the product based on the price difference. But, if the price difference is small, i.e- less than 5%, then the customers will see other factors such as eco-certification before buying the product as many of them believe in sustainable development and conservation of the environment.
Lastly, the passage suggests that it would only make sense for the American companies to be eco-certified if they sell their products abroad which they do not. The professor in the listening passage is doubtful that this is accurate. This is because many Americans can be interested in buying eco-certified products. So, if American companies cannot provide certified products, then the customers will switch their brand preference to foreign companies which are certified. Thus, giving a chance for the foreign companies to grow in the American market.
In conclusion, both the author of the reading passage and the lecturer in the listening passage hold conflicting views about the eco-certification of American wood companies. Thus, it is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
