Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The author introduces the groundbreaking book called “The Travels of Marco Pollo”. Specifically, the writer discusses the criticisms the book received. The Speaker in the listening passage disagrees. He believes that Pollo did not lie in his book and attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
First, the writer begins by stating that according to the book, Pollo was appointed governor of the city of Yangzhou for three years. And that it is unlikely for this position to be awarded to a foreigner, and Polo’s name was absent from all Government records. The speaker, on the other hand, refutes this point by saying that Polo’s position in government was mistranslated and that he was only an ambassador which is not a high-level position. Therefore, his name not mentioned in the government records was simply because the position he held was a low one.
Secondly, the writer also claims that critics have also suggested that Marco Pollo lied about visiting Northern China since in the book he never mentioned the great wall of China. Again, the professor believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic. He holds that Marco Polo traveled to China after the Mangos had invaded the city. So, the wall was in a state of repair. Therefore, even if Pollo had seen the wall, it probably did not look worthy to be taken note of.
Finally, the writer brings his argument to a close by making reference to Frances Wood who says that Polo never visited China and this claim is supported by the fact that there was no Italian trading post in Mongolia or China at that time. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that there is no evidence to support the claim, and some details verified that Polo mentioned churches found in China by archeologists which no other person has mentioned.
In summary, Both the writer and the speaker hold conflicting views about Marco Polo and his book “The Travels of Marco Polo”. It is clear that they will have a problem finding a common ground on this issue.
