The reading article claims that dams are incredible engineering marvels that represent one of the most beneficial and effective forms of electricity creation today and gives three reasons for that. However, the lecturer casts doubt on each point of the article and claims that are many drawbacks of dams and gives three reasons for that.
Firstly, the article states that dams positively impact the environment. In contrast, the lecturer casts doubt on this point by stating that environment suffers because of dams. In addition, the lecturer adds that dams make messy structure because of workers who worked for dams. Dams create the significant problem with natural water flow. Once the dam work is finished, the water flow becomes slower. This creates a problem with migrating fish population. It will affect reproduction capacity of fishes who require fast water flow.
Secondly, the article avers that the power generated from a dam produces no harmful pollutants. However, the lecturer contradicts this point by saying that dams contribute pollution. Furthermore, he adds that dams create flood in lakes. Because of this lake flooding, vegetation will die. This will affect Carbon dioxide gas absorption. Dams also release methane gas which is global warming gas. These two gases will increase pollution.
Finally, the article posits that dams create no financial burden for the community. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this point by mentioning that area must be relocated where owners who buy property near dams. This would expense a lot of money, so this is not cheap. This relocating area must be needed government aid to pay tax.
