In this set of materials, the reading and lecture both are discussing about effects of appearances of a university professor on tv. The article states that professor's appearance on tv will not only benefit the professor himself but also the university and public too. The lecturer casts doubt on all the claims by the reading passage. He presents several disadvantages of professor's appearance on tv.
First of all, the article states that television appearance of a professor to a very large audience will gain him a lot of fame. His idea's would not be limited to group of scholars but will also benefit to a wider audience. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that it is not beneficial for professor to appear on tv. Fellow scholars will consider such professor as entertainer and not a serious researcher. They would not get invited to the conferences. The worst thing that will happen is that they would not get money for doing research as no one will consider them as a serious scholar.
Furthermore, according to the article, the university will also get benefited because of professor's appearance on tv. The university affiliated to the professor will become popular and will receive large donations. They even be able to attract top students to the university. On the other hand, the speaker contends that tv appearances will waste valuable time that a professor should use to do research, helping students or conducting university responsibilities. So the university would not benefit from it either.
Finally, the lecturer contradicts with the last point made in article, which states that the tv viewers will able to gain lot of important information from such scholarly person otherwise, would not be accessible to them. However, the lecturer claims that viewers are not at all interested in such serious intellectual programs during their dinner time. Such views on issues can also be provided by journalist, who can gain through knowledge with the extensive research of the topic prior to program.
