Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific points made in the reading passage
Experts think that the rapid decline of sea otters on the Alaskan coast can be due to environmental pollution or to predation. The reading suggests the cause being pollution, however the professor supports predation, and refutes the author’s points.
First of all, the professor posits that there is no dead sea otters found near the Alaskan coast in evidence. This shows that sea otters were probably eaten by predators. So the author's claim that due to industrial chemical pollution and oil rigs near the Alaskan coast sea otters are dying is wrong.
Second, the professor argues that Orcas couldn’t find big mammals to eat due to human hunting and started eating small sea mammals that's why other small sea mammals have also declined. This opposes the author’s point that other small sea mammals are also vanishing due to environmental pollution.
Finally, the professor points out that the uneven pattern of sea otters decline in different locations of Alaskan coasts is not due to the uneven concentration of pollutants nearby as author claimed. Actually, Orcas can’t access to shallow and rocky areas due to their big size, so the areas where they can easily reach to sea otters have greater decline of otters than other areas.
