Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific
points made in the reading passage.
The lecturer and author of the passage have different opinion about accuracy of the Chevalier de Seingalt’s memoir. The text and the lecture offer three opposing views on some life events that were described in the memoir.
The lecturer starts with explanation of reasons why Chevalier had to get loans for his live in Switzerland. Specifically, he had wealth but to get money from it he had have sell it first, so that was reasonable to get some loans while his cash was on the way. The authors have a contradicted point of view explaining that if he was wealthy than he would not need the loan. Although, in the texts authors do not support their thought with any relevant evidence.
The second point, that critics from the article hold really skeptical position about the accuracy of the records of conversation with the Voltaire, the famous writer. They suggest that Chevalier could not be capable to remember all details of that conversation because the memoir was written many years later. The lecturer claims that there are some historical evidence the Chevalier kept all his talks and thought in notes and journals, that is why the professor strongly believe in accuracy of those written talks.
The third event that critics point out to be a lie, that escape of Chevalier was not real he probably gave a bribe with help of his powerful friends, but the lecturer disagrees with that point explaining that there is a mention of necessary of repair of the roof from some government’s documents after escape of the Chevalier, so that is strong elaboration of her argument. Additionally, the lecturer claims that among prisoners were a lot more people with stronger connections and possibilities for brides.
It is obvious that author and the professor holds controversial opinion of the accuracy of the memoir and would not be capable to find a common ground on that.
