Summarize the points made in the lecture, explaining how they relate to the points made in the reading. Use specific examples and details from both passages in your answer.
The reading and the lecture discuss about the writer Ernest Hemingway, by explaining their different opinions regarding some specific points. Even though they both agree on the success of his work, they have different opinions about his style and the gender portraits he presents.
Firstly, in the reading it is supported that Hemingway puts too much of his own expressions in his novels, which makes it highly autobiographical and even unrealistic to some extent. But in the lecture, the woman emphasizes that by being a journalist, his minimalist approach has an impact on other people and his novels are not simple, they are actually realistic and genius.
Secondly, the reading criticizes Hemingway’s rhetorical style by saying that it is basic, so that it does not have the required style and imagination. But the woman in the lecture thinks that he has a direct rhetorical style and she further explains his double narration and inference techniques. According to the woman, Hemingway’s inference technique makes his novels challenging for the readers since this technique allows readers to infer meaning by not giving them all the details.
Finally, the reading supports that Hemingway has a lack of understanding of women and hence he describes them inaccurately by portraying them as one-dimensional characters, which takes the feminists’ opposition. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees by claiming that he actually has a good perspective of women even though he is a man.
To conclude, even though both the reading and the lecture have the common view of Hemingway’s work as being admirable and worth appreciating, they have opposing views regarding his autobiographic tone, rhetorical style and his perception of women in his novels.
