The taxes of the cigarettes are similar to the purchases of cigarettes; the taxes of being high taxes on cigarettes and other unhealthy products has a number of social benefits. First of all, the taxes Smoking has declined as taxes on tobacco have risen, showing that these taxes do work to make society healthier. It can be expected that discourage people from indulging in unhealthy behaviors. Raising taxes on cigarettes, for instance, leads people to buy fewer of them. Imposing similar taxes on unhealthy food and beverages would help reduce obesity rates. Second, taxes of this kind are financially fair. When people get sick as a result of their smoking or eating unhealthy foods, they create medical costs. It is unfair that everyone in the society, including nonsmokers and people who follow a healthy diet, should contribute equally to covering these costs. Taxing people who Engage in unhealthy behaviors creates extra income that can be used to cover the medical costs. In this way, some of the financial burden is shifted from all of society to just those who choose to participate in the unhealthy activities. Finally, the high rate of Taxation on cigarettes significant increases revenue for the government. In addition to using this tax revenue on medical assistance,The governments of the benefit of the benefits of other projects that benefit public welfare, such as building stadiums or creating public parks. Even basic government-supported services like public education benefit from these taxes. Thus, the taxes on cigarettes, and the proposed taxes on unhealthy foods , benefit everyone.
The reading passage discusses the potential benefits which might arise from charging taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy food. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the reading passage and refutes them one by one.
At first, the reading states that charging taxes on cigarettes have discouraged people from buying them and it is expected that charging taxes on unhealthy food would help to solve the problem. Conversely, the lecturer believes that charging taxes will not lead to healthy behavior. She argues that after rising taxes some of the smokers have turned to a cheaper cigarette with a lower quality which is deleterious for their health. She thinks that this can happen to food consumers who continue to use junk food and spend less money on healthy food and damage even more.
Furthermore, the reading suggests that putting taxes on cigarettes and unhealthy food is fair for everyone because, in this manner, those who have consumed more of this unhealthy products will have to cover most of the financial burden created by them. On the contrary, the lecturer maintains that fairness is a different way of approach in this manner. She offers that in this manner peoples income will not be considered and the ones with lower income will have to pay as much as the higher income. It is a much heavier burden for individuals with lower income.
Finally, the reading mentions that an increase in the revenues will increase government incomes. It offers that government can spend this money not only on medical assistance but also it can spend it on the projects that will benefit the public the most. In contrast, the lecturer states that this idea has its own downsides. She offers that the income from this taxation will be millions of dollars and governments will depend on it and will not seize to use it. The professor believes that the governments cannot do a radical work on pursuing and eliminating the unhealthy food and smoke if it counts on the money it acquires from taxes on these products. It will not pass laws that diminish the use of cigarettes for example in the public areas.
